At the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, six Olympic records were broken in speed skating, marking the fastest ice conditions yet experienced at the Games.

Mark Messer, the ice technician known as the Ice Master, has overseen ice conditions at six previous Winter Olympic Games and managed the ice surface at the temporary 400-meter rink located at the Fiera Milano Rho exhibition center for these Games. Messer explained that the facility presented a unique challenge as the first temporary indoor oval of its kind at the Olympics, requiring adjustments to accommodate factors such as crowd-induced temperature fluctuations and variable outdoor humidity.
Preparation and maintenance of the ice depended on managing several key variables including ice temperature, air temperature, and humidity inside the hall. The ice was maintained at a thickness of approximately six centimeters, thicker than usual, and air control measures were implemented to prevent frost formation on the surface. Messer emphasized the vital role of experienced Zamboni operators in maintaining consistent ice conditions for all competitors by carefully managing ice resurfacing procedures.
The breaking of several Olympic speed skating records during the Games was attributed both to the evolution of the sport and the high skill levels of the athletes, who have been preparing diligently over the four years since the last Olympics. Among these milestones was the breaking of the longstanding 1000-meter Olympic record set by Gerard van Velde in 2002. The new record was set by Jordan Stolz of the United States, who completed the distance in 1:06.28, surpassing the previous time of 1:07.18.
Messer expressed pride in the ice team’s role in providing conditions that support record-breaking performances while acknowledging that the athletes are ultimately the focal point of the competition. The achievement of these records marks a significant moment in Olympic speed skating and reflects ongoing advancements in both athlete performance and ice technology.
