The Dutch men’s team pursuit speed skating event at the Olympic Games in Milan concluded without a medal and was marked by internal discord, particularly involving skater Marcel Bosker and coach Rintje Ritsma.
According to the Dutch news outlet NOS, the event featured a dramatic sequence that began before the competition started and culminated shortly after the team missed the final for gold and silver.
The Dutch trio of Stijn van de Bunt, Chris Huizinga, and Jorrit Bergsma narrowly lost the chance to compete for gold. The bronze medal match against China was still to come, but coach Rintje Ritsma decided that Marcel Bosker, who was selected specifically for the team pursuit over Tim Prins, would not skate in the final. This decision led to Bosker leaving the stadium abruptly and returning to the Olympic Village by bus. Bosker expressed frustration, stating that he understood the coach’s authority but believed he could have made a difference if given the chance.
Following Bosker’s departure, the Dutch team’s staff and coaching personnel actively tried to contact him and encourage his return in case he was needed as a reserve due to injury or other circumstances. Around 16:20, just before the bronze medal race was scheduled to begin, Bosker had not yet returned. He eventually arrived twenty minutes after the Dutch team narrowly missed out on the bronze.
When asked about his absence, Bosker cited unexpected traffic delays but did not wish to elaborate further. The team leadership, including Ritsma and other officials, were present at the bus stop awaiting his return, likening their stance to authority figures confronting a student who had skipped a class. Bosker clarified that he had not been promised participation in the race and had not expected to compete but left momentarily due to emotional frustration.
Coach Rintje Ritsma acknowledged Bosker’s disappointment but emphasized the importance of unity and the contributions of all team members, whether they competed or not. Ritsma maintained that all four skaters were essential throughout the competition and expressed regret that Bosker viewed the situation differently.
This episode has sparked further discussion and criticism regarding coaching decisions on team selection. Nevertheless, Ritsma stated that he remains focused on performing his duties to secure the best results for the team.
