Patrick Roest will not participate in the Olympic qualification tournament starting December 26 in Heerenveen, as he failed to secure a spot in the qualifying competition.
NOS, a news outlet based in the Netherlands, reports on Roest’s missed qualification opportunity.
The 30-year-old Dutch speed skater Patrick Roest, who won an Olympic silver medal in Beijing in 2022, needed to finish in the top five at the Holland Cup event in Enschede to secure a place in the Olympic qualification tournament. He placed eighth in the 5,000-meter race, which was insufficient for direct qualification.
Roest’s current season has continued the downward trend from last year, which was marked by fatigue and complications from an infected wisdom tooth. Despite making it through to the Dutch National Championships from the Holland Cup held in Deventer, his eleventh-place finish did not secure a ticket for the World Cup circuit. At the event in Enschede, Roest recorded a time of 6:34.87 in the 5,000 meters, over ten seconds slower than the winner Jesse Speijers.
As a result, Roest is now reliant on the Dutch skating federation (KNSB) to award him a designated spot for the Olympic qualification tournament. His recent performances have been described as inconsistent and frustrating, and his prospects of competing at the upcoming Winter Games remain uncertain under current circumstances.
