Bente Kerkhoff secured her first World Cup win in speed skating during a challenging race on Norwegian ice, demonstrating strong tactical awareness and endurance.
The 23-year-old athlete from North Holland impressed spectators with her alert and decisive riding, which allowed her to take the lead when the opportunity arose unexpectedly. Riding closely with teammate Marijke Groenewoud, who attracted the attention of their rivals, Kerkhoff managed to break away and maintain her lead to the finish line.
Kerkhoff had previously earned a bronze medal in Salt Lake City, but this victory marked a significant milestone in her first World Cup season. After the race, she acknowledged the importance of the win for her confidence, especially during the Olympic season. Groenewoud, who finished strongly as well, highlighted the effective teamwork between the two skaters in the final stage of the race.
Throughout the race, Kerkhoff actively pursued intermediate sprint points essential for her ranking and took the initiative by moving ahead well before the halfway mark. Despite a moment of hesitation, she pressed forward, capitalizing on the competitors from Canada and the United States who were reluctant to collaborate. This strategic move allowed her to secure a clear path to victory. Groenewoud humorously noted the intensity of the competition behind Kerkhoff, expressing satisfaction with their coordinated effort.
