Metoděj Jílek has made a strong impression in senior speed skating, leading the long-distance World Cup rankings shortly after moving up from junior competition, with guidance from experienced teammate Martina Sáblíková.
ISU Skating, the official site of the International Skating Union based in Switzerland, provides detailed coverage of Jílek’s progression in the sport.
The Czech skater first gained recognition as the Junior World Champion in Mass Start and 5000m speed skating events. Moving quickly into senior ranks, Jílek has already secured silver and bronze medals in World Cup events during the previous season and now leads the long-distance World Cup standings after four competitions in the current season. His dedication and discipline have been noted across the sport, with veteran teammate Martina Sáblíková, a highly decorated Olympian, praising him as exceptionally committed for his age.
Beginning inline skating at five years old, Jílek has balanced his training between inline skating in summer and ice speed skating in winter. His career includes five World Junior titles in inline skating, reflecting strong versatility. Alongside coach Kalon Dobbin and other teammates like Livio Wenger, his development has been marked by steady progress. Sáblíková, the most successful Czech speed skater with an Olympic medal tally spanning seven awards and numerous world titles, has acted as a mentor since Jílek joined the senior national team, offering practical advice on competition routines, race preparation, and administrative matters such as doping control procedures.
Among Jílek’s notable achievements this season is a track record performance at the World Cup event in Hamar, Norway, where he improved the long-standing 5000m record set by Sven Kramer in 2009 by over two seconds. He credits his inline skating background and continuous training camps, including planned sessions over the Christmas period, with helping maintain and enhance his competitive edge.
