Van de Bunt Shows Mental Strength and Readiness with Olympic Spot Secured

Van de Bunt demonstrated remarkable calm and mental resilience leading up to his qualifying race, despite recovering from a serious injury just months prior, and has now secured an Olympic ticket.

Schaatsen.nl, a Dutch skating news outlet, reports on his progress and outlook.

The young athlete exhibited an unusual sense of calm the night before his race, sleeping soundly without the usual tension. He explained that this peace of mind stemmed from knowing his capabilities and what he needed to focus on, contrasting with previous experiences of heightened pre-race nerves. It was only after completing his performance, while waiting for other competitors’ results, that his heart rate increased noticeably.

His mental strength is even more significant considering the setback he experienced during a summer training camp in Mallorca, where he suffered a broken back and fractured ribs. He spent three days hospitalized and was sidelined from training for eight days, finding recovery a slow process. Despite this, he has rebounded impressively to earn an Olympic qualification.

Within his team, there is optimism about his future potential. Coach Bouwman highlighted their carefully structured training program, which has been refined through testing this year. He noted that Van de Bunt is mentally strong and knows exactly what he is doing. While it is not yet guaranteed that he will compete for podium positions alongside the top contenders, maintaining his current level could enable him to close the gap.

Additionally, Van de Bunt is seen as an ideal candidate for the team pursuit event. Bouwman praised his abilities, emphasizing his capacity to support the team by leading the pace, demonstrating speed, and contributing powerfully. Van de Bunt himself expressed enthusiasm for the team pursuit, jokingly inviting the call to join the event.
