Jenning de Boo won the 500 meter event at the Olympic qualifying tournament, securing his place in the upcoming Olympic Games in Milan.

De Boo was the clear favorite going into the race and posted an impressive winning time of 33.96 seconds. Despite a strong challenge from Sebas Diniz, who finished second with 34.14 seconds, De Boo claimed victory with his best time ever recorded at Thialf. His performance was just short of the track record of 33.90 seconds held by Jordan Stolz, whom De Boo had briefly held the record before Stolz reclaimed it three weeks ago.
Joep Wennemars took third place with a time of 34.48 seconds, outperforming Stefan Westenbroek and Merijn Scheperkamp, who were also aiming for qualification. The qualification system allows nine male skaters to compete at the Olympics, with De Boo already securing one of those spots. Diniz and Wennemars remain in contention, but their participation depends on further results and the overall qualification matrix.
After the first circuit, Diniz surprisingly led with a time faster than De Boo’s initial run, but the overall results are based on the combined times of the two runs. De Boo’s strong second effort ensured his top position and Olympic qualification. The competition continues with the men taking a break before the 1000 meter races on Monday, while the tournament also features women’s events and longer distances for men in the coming days.
