Anna Boersma faced a challenging start in her first race but managed to recover and secure third place, bringing her closer to a potential spot at the upcoming Games.
According to an article on Schaatsen.nl, Boersma’s initial race was difficult as she made a significant mistake on the first straightaway and lacked her usual speed. She noticed her opponent gaining on her in the turn and chose to hold back deliberately, conserving energy for her second race.
Between her two 500-meter races, Boersma took time to release her emotions, crying with support from her coaches while maintaining confidence in her strong start. She capitalized on this mindset during the second race, achieving a surprise third-place finish with a time of 37.27 seconds. This result put her around twelfth in the overall ranking and brought her closer to qualifying for the Games, a possibility she described as almost unreal.
The competition was emotionally complex as teammates and friends were also rivals. In the final heat, Boersma’s friend Marrit Fledderus, who appeared to struggle under pressure, was eliminated after two false starts. Boersma expressed mixed feelings about this outcome, acknowledging how difficult it was to celebrate when her friend was forced out of the competition.
