Jenning de Boo has won the 1,000 meter event at the Dutch Olympic qualifying tournament (OKT), securing his second Olympic ticket with a time of 1:06.84, the second fastest ever recorded at Thialf.
According to NOS, the Netherlands, reigning world champion Joep Wennemars finished second, half a second behind De Boo with a time of 1:07.34, ensuring his place for the Milan Olympics. Kjeld Nuis claimed the third Olympic spot, narrowly beating Tim Prins by 0.005 seconds in the final heat with a time of 1:07.541 versus 1:07.546. Prins missed qualification by this minimal margin.
The top three finishers were guaranteed Olympic spots given their high rankings in the qualifying matrix. De Boo, already safe from his previous 500 meter win, set an excellent pace despite recently losing his track record to Jordan Stolz. Wennemars, who had placed third in the 500 meters, needed a podium finish to secure his qualification and achieved this with a strong second-place time.
The final heat featured a dramatic showdown between teammates Nuis and Prins. Prins gained an early lead during the first 600 meters but Nuis, with extensive experience, made a decisive push on the last lap to edge out Prins by the slimmest of margins. Both athletes displayed strong emotions following the race, with joy for Nuis and disappointment for Prins highlighted by their razor-thin finish difference.
