Kjeld Nuis qualified for the 1000 meter event at the Olympic Trials by a narrow margin but expressed disappointment due to his partner missing out on her Olympic spot.
Schaatsen.nl, a Dutch speed skating news outlet, reports that Nuis earned the third qualifying spot in the 1000 meters with a time of 1:07.54, beating teammate Tim Prins by just 0.005 seconds in the final race of the event.
The competition between Nuis and Prins was intense, both finishing in identical official times down to the hundredth of a second, but the difference was determined by the thousandth of a second, giving Nuis the edge. Despite this personal success, Nuis did not display his typical enthusiasm after qualifying.
Nuis was visibly upset following the event, primarily because his girlfriend, Joy Beune, failed to qualify for the Olympics in her preferred 1500 meter distance. He recounted watching her race unfold and described the frustration of seeing her struggle after equipment issues disrupted her performance. Nuis expressed sadness that despite Beune’s consistent success in World Cups, she would be absent from the Olympic Games due to what he considers overly strict qualification rules.
Reflecting on his own race, Nuis admitted recalling the disappointment from four years ago when teammate Hein Otterspeer narrowly denied him the Olympic spot in the same event. This time, Nuis succeeded but lamented that his own qualification felt overshadowed by Beune’s failure to qualify. Looking ahead, Nuis intends to focus on the 1500 meters, an event in which he previously won Olympic gold medals in 2018 and 2022.
He plans to move past this emotionally challenging day and prepare for his upcoming races, hoping to perform well despite the mixed emotions from the current situation.
