Joy Beune was not awarded an automatic selection spot for the 1500 meter event at the Olympic Games despite her strong performance during the World Cup season.
Telegraaf, published in the Netherlands, reports that Beune submitted a request for a designated selection position but was not chosen by the selection committee.
Beune, the reigning world champion, finished fourth at the Olympic qualification tournament, narrowly missing out on an automatic berth for the Games. Despite winning all three World Cup races she entered this season over 1500 meters, the committee decided not to grant her an appointment spot. Technical director Remy de Wit explained that the performance level among the top athletes was extremely close, with the three skaters who finished first, second, and third at the qualifier also considered medal contenders at the Olympics.
De Wit further clarified that the selection process was agreed upon with all involved skaters and coaches prior to the qualification period, and that no skater was given protected status based on previous results. This means that despite Beune’s dominant recent performances, the qualification outcomes at the tournament ultimately determined the official team nominations. De Wit noted that there was no prior agreement to automatically secure a selection place based on World Cup wins alone.
The skating federation reaffirmed that the selection criteria and results were transparent and consistently communicated throughout the qualification process. Beune expressed disappointment at missing the Games, a sentiment reflected in messages she received from international competitors.
