Nuis conveyed that missing out on Joy’s 1500 meter at the Olympic Qualification Tournament was an emotional moment for him, during which he openly expressed his disappointment. However, he emphasized that both he and Joy have now secured their places at the Olympics, marking a significant achievement that he describes simply as the “first dream that has come true.”
Despite this positive development, the announcement of the Olympic start lists introduced a challenging element: due to team adjustments, Nuis was granted a starting spot in the 1500 meter event while another skater, Tim Prins, was dropped. This shift led to a rapid change in tone on social media, escalating from support for Nuis’s enthusiasm and sportsmanship to negative commentary. Nuis acknowledged that while he has a resilient mindset, such responses are unpleasant and have affected his ability to enjoy the moment fully.
