Greta Myers from Lino Lakes, Minnesota, has qualified to represent the United States in speed skating at the 2024 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
Myers, who learned to speed skate at the Roseville Oval, experienced both setbacks and triumph at the recent Olympic trials held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Initially disqualified in the 1500-meter event due to a faulty exchange, she was granted a rare re-skate opportunity with an Olympic berth at stake. Demonstrating resilience, Myers improved her previous time and secured her place on the team.
At 21 years old, Myers described the qualification as a surreal and exhilarating experience, marking the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to become an Olympian. She expressed admiration for athletes like Michael Phelps and Simone Biles, whom she grew up idolizing, and is now preparing to compete at her first Winter Games.
Following the trials, Myers briefly returned home to Minnesota to celebrate her achievement after months away training. She mentioned the sacrifices involved in pursuing Olympic competition, including missing family Christmas celebrations to focus on training. Myers also spoke with pride about joining fellow Minnesotan athletes representing the United States, emphasizing the state’s strong tradition in winter sports.
