After securing a silver medal in the 500 meters, Jordan Stolz demonstrated his superior performance in the 1500 meters, finishing significantly ahead of his competitors.
NOS, a Dutch news outlet, reports on Stolz’s dominant showing at the World Cup event as he prepares for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Stolz, a 21-year-old American speed skater, was first challenged earlier in the evening in the 500 meters by Polish skater Damian Zurek, who prevented Stolz from claiming gold by setting a track record. However, Stolz responded strongly in the 1500 meters by finishing 1.2 seconds faster than the Chinese skater Zhongyan Ning, winning comfortably and affirming his status as the top competitor in the World Cup season for this distance.
Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis captured the bronze medal in the 1500 meters, finishing nearly two seconds behind Stolz. Nuis posted the fastest initial split of the field but could not maintain his pace, resulting in a time of 1:43.81. Despite this, Nuis expressed satisfaction with his effort, acknowledging Stolz’s extraordinary performance and emphasizing that he remains the highest-ranking Dutch skater on the podium this season.
Other Dutch competitors, including Tim Prins and Tijmen Snel, finished further back, ranking twelfth and fifteenth respectively. Prins had qualified for this distance through the Olympic qualifying tournament but was replaced by Marcel Bosker in the starting lineup. Their times were 1:45.13 and 1:45.49, respectively, indicating a competitive field.
Earlier, Damian Zurek set a new track record in the 500 meters with a time of 34.09 seconds, almost two tenths of a second faster than Stolz’s 34.26. This result suggests Zurek could become a significant rival in the World Cup standings, adding to the previously known challenge from Jenning de Boo, who placed seventh in the 500 meters but admitted to a subpar performance.
Stolz’s consistent results across both 500 meter races secured him the overall lead in the World Cup ranking for that distance. The bronze medal went to Marten Liiv from Estonia. Notably, Dutch skaters Joep Wennemars and Sebas Diniz finished outside the top positions, with times of 34.93 and 34.75 seconds respectively. The weekend’s second 500 meter race is scheduled for Sunday.
