Francesca Lollobrigida achieved an unexpected victory in the opening speed skating event, delivering her best performance at a crucial moment.
Schaatsen.nl, a Dutch news source, reported on the results of the race.
After a season of inconsistent performances, Italian skater Francesca Lollobrigida rose to the occasion by winning the opening distance at the tournament with a time of 3:54.28. This time proved unbeatable for the rest of the field. Lollobrigida’s victory was not widely anticipated given her prior results, making her win a notable surprise.
The silver medal was claimed by Norwegian skater Ragne Wiklund, who finished with a time of 3:56.54, trailing Lollobrigida by over two seconds. Canadian competitor Valérie Maltais took the bronze with a time of 3:56.93.
For the Dutch team, no medals were won in this event. Joy Beune was the closest contender among the Dutch skaters, finishing in fourth place. Marijke Groenewoud placed sixth, while Merel Conijn came in seventh. This leaves the Dutch women without medals after the first distance of the games.
