Joep Wennemars has maintained his individual identity in speed skating through conscious decisions and support from his father, Erben Wennemars.
Schaatsen.nl, published in the Netherlands, reports on the deliberate steps taken by Joep and Erben to manage their public image and Joep’s skating career.
Rather than distancing themselves, Erben and Joep opted to stop giving joint interviews to avoid perpetuating the image of being a duo rather than acknowledging Joep as an individual athlete. Despite this boundary, Erben remains actively involved by providing advice and assistance with skate preparation when needed. The focus is on recognizing Joep’s personal identity and development within the sport.
Renate, a close observer of Joep’s progress, offers a measured perspective on his talent. She recalls that Erben always acknowledged Joep’s greater talent but notes that Erben’s own success was not solely due to natural ability. Renate highlights Joep’s dedication and discipline, qualities she regards as a form of talent in themselves. She adds that Joep, like his father, has a high tolerance for physical discomfort, which helps him push through challenges where others might stop.
However, Renate also describes a moment when she intervened due to concerns about Joep’s well-being. When a new ice track selection program was introduced in Deventer, initiated by Erben, it brought increased demands such as training schedules, status symbols, travel, and extra competitions. The cumulative pressure began to affect Joep’s health and balance, as he juggled school and rigorous training commitments.
Renate approached Joep about the situation, expressing her worries that the load had become too much for him. To her surprise, Joep agreed that stepping back was necessary, viewing it as a relief rather than a loss. Subsequently, Joep left the selection program and returned to his home club, Stokvisdennen, which fosters an environment where various levels of skaters train together with a focus on enjoyment and personal growth.
At Stokvisdennen, Joep found a supportive and safe setting, filled with training camps, long days with teammates, rigorous workouts, and camaraderie. Renate emphasizes that this club structure helped young athletes like Joep remain healthy, fit, and balanced, allowing space for everyone’s development and well-being.
