American speed skater Jordan Stolz secured the gold medal in the men’s 1000 meter event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, finishing with a time of 1:06.28.
According to Schaatsen.nl, Stolz delivered a commanding performance in the race, leading a strong field that included notable competitors from several countries. Stolz’s victory marks a significant achievement as he continues to establish himself as a top contender in multiple individual speed skating events throughout these Games.
The silver medal was claimed by Jenning de Boo with a time of 1:06.78, while China’s Zhongyan Ning took bronze, finishing in 1:07.34. Dutch skater Joep Wennemars experienced interference from his competitor Ziwen Lian during his initial attempt and was unable to improve his time in a subsequent race, ultimately placing fifth with 1:07.58. Kjeld Nuis, another Dutch favorite and two-time Olympic champion, finished sixth with a time of 1:07.65.
The men’s 1000 meter has now been included in fourteen editions of the Winter Olympics, with the United States and the Netherlands historically the most successful nations in this discipline, each holding five gold medals. Kjeld Nuis was the only former medalist competing this year in Milan, joined by Canadian Laurent Dubreuil, who is also a previous Olympic medalist in this distance.
Additional developments include Czech skater Martina Sablikova’s decision to compete in the 5000 meter race on Thursday despite recent health challenges that caused her to skip the 3000 meter event. The decision was made in consultation with medical staff, who deemed her fit to participate, though Sablikova acknowledged the difficulty of the situation.
Jordan Stolz’s coach confirmed that Stolz will not participate in the team pursuit event, limiting his focus to four individual events: the 500, 1000, 1500 meters, and the mass start. Stolz is considered the clear favorite especially in the 1000 meter, where his recent performances have been dominant.
Other notable stories include a special auction of a signed TeamNL Legends jacket to support Dutch sports clubs and celebrations by Italian medalists from the mixed relay event. Interviews with athletes such as Joep Wennemars and analyses from experts provide insights into the competition’s dynamics and the athletes’ outlooks as the Games continue.
