During a recent speed skating event, Joep Wennemars experienced a significant disruption caused by a collision with fellow competitor Lian, resulting in a delay and subsequent restart of his race.
According to Schaatsen.nl, the incident took place on the intersection of the track, where Lian inadvertently impeded Wennemars, eliciting a strong reaction from the latter and an audible response from the crowd. Despite this, Wennemars completed the initial race in a respectable time of 1:07.58. However, the collision and ensuing frustration visibly affected him as he reacted with both physical gestures and expressions of discontent.
Following the event, the officials intervened, allowing Wennemars to have a second attempt after it became clear that the interference was caused by Lian. The skater retreated from public view, receiving support from his coach Jac Orie and movement scientist Nico Hofman to prepare for the restart. The atmosphere was tense as Wennemars and his team regrouped in a preparation area known as Palestri Atleti, seeking to regain focus ahead of the upcoming race.
Despite efforts to recover, the second race, only thirty minutes after the first, proved challenging. Wennemars finished in 1:08.46, a strong performance given the short recovery time and the physical toll taken by the earlier incident.
