Jordan Stolz secured the Olympic gold medal in the 1000 meters speed skating event in Milan, narrowly defeating Dutch skater Jenning de Boo, who earned silver in his Olympic debut.

Jenning de Boo had openly expressed his ambition to win the Olympic 1000 meter race in Milan, even though he faced stiff competition from the nearly unbeatable American Jordan Stolz. De Boo emphasized the need for courage and perfection to overcome Stolz in a direct duel. While De Boo showed strong potential throughout much of the race, Stolz ultimately prevailed to claim the gold medal.
During the race, De Boo started with particular strength, clocking an opening time of 16.06 seconds compared to Stolz’s 16.18 seconds. He maintained a lead of 0.25 seconds at the 600 meter mark, which put Stolz on alert. Stolz acknowledged feeling the pressure when he saw De Boo ahead midway through the race, prompting him to push harder in the final lap.
In the last lap, Stolz demonstrated his exceptional closing speed, completing the final lap in 25.66 seconds. He overtook De Boo midway through the final curve, securing his victory. De Boo praised Stolz’s finish as virtually unbeatable and noted that although he followed his race plan, he fell just short of the perfect performance he had hoped for.
Stolz’s dominance in the 2023 and 2024 seasons was reaffirmed by this result, having won multiple world titles in the 500, 1000, and 1500 meters previously. Despite a less successful 2025 season due to fitness issues, Stolz entered the Olympic race as the favorite, having won all World Cup races at the distance that season except for one where De Boo came close.
Both athletes acknowledged the pressure surrounding the Olympic event. Stolz described the experience as having the weight of four years of anticipation but said that once on the ice, his focus was on executing his performance. Meanwhile, De Boo expressed satisfaction with his silver medal in his first Olympics, calling it a confidence-building result and highlighting his status as world champion in the 500 meters rather than the 1000 meters.
Looking ahead, De Boo aims to deliver a perfect race in the upcoming 500 meters event, while Stolz anticipates continued competition in that distance as well as the 1500 meters and mass start.
