Jenning de Boo secured the silver medal in the Olympic 500 meter speed skating event, finishing closely behind favorite Jordan Stolz, who set a new Olympic record.

The race featured a direct duel between the two leading sprinters in the world. Stolz, skating from the inside lane, narrowly defeated De Boo, who skated from the outside lane, with a time of 33.77 seconds that set an Olympic record. De Boo finished just 0.11 seconds behind at 33.88 seconds. This event marked the second silver medal for the reigning world champion De Boo at these Winter Games, following his earlier silver in the 1,000 meters.
Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil took bronze with a time of 34.26 seconds, while the Pole Damian Zurek, who had been a strong contender based on recent performances, came in fourth at 34.35 seconds. Sebas Diniz finished fifth, and Joep Wennemars, recovering from a disappointing 1,000 meters, placed 21st with a time of 34.89 seconds.
The race lived up to expectations as an elite showdown between Stolz and De Boo. De Boo managed to close the gap during the race, coming alongside Stolz in the final turn before Stolz edged ahead in the last meters. Despite his efforts, De Boo was unable to surpass Stolz, who claimed his second gold medal of the Games. The Netherlands now has a total of eight medals at the Winter Olympics in Italy.
De Boo had expressed confidence going into the race, acknowledging some nerves but eager for the challenge. Although rarely able to beat Stolz in the 500 meters in recent years, he remains the primary challenger, having set the fastest season time and holding the world champion title. Meanwhile, Dubreuil set a new Olympic record during the competition but was ultimately surpassed by both American and Dutch skaters in their direct heats.
Looking ahead, Wennemars is preparing for the 1,500 meters, where he is considered a medal contender. The Olympic speed skating competition will continue with the women’s 500 meters, featuring top athletes Femke Kok, Jutta Leerdam, and Anna Boersma.
