Dutch speed skating coach Rintje Ritsma commented on recent confusion regarding the men’s team pursuit lineup at the Winter Olympics, describing the situation as an overreaction to a minor issue.
According to nu.nl, Ritsma spoke to the Dutch media after a training session in Milan, emphasizing that the team remains united despite recent media reports. He stated that there had been some miscommunication that was amplified beyond its actual significance.
The confusion arose after Stijn van de Bunt expressed disappointment about learning through the media that he might not participate in the quarterfinals of the team pursuit event. Van de Bunt had placed fifth in the 10,000 meters and preferred to receive direct communication from the coach. However, Ritsma clarified that Van de Bunt was informed he would compete alongside Chris Huizinga and Marcel Bosker, with Jorrit Bergsma designated as the reserve, reflecting the lineup submitted to the skating federation (KNSB) prior to the Games.
Ritsma explained that he had told Van de Bunt and his coach, Erik Bouwman, that the final decision on the lineup would come after the 10,000-meter race. He noted that each of the athletes involved expected to skate, and that many discussions have taken place to ensure clarity and consensus within the team.
The men’s team pursuit is a complex event for the Dutch squad, particularly this year, as Beau Snellink, a usual team member, did not qualify for the Olympics. Van de Bunt, who has not previously competed in team pursuit at the senior level, joined the lineup. The quarterfinal on Sunday will mark his first race alongside Huizinga and Bosker, though the trio has trained together frequently in recent weeks, often with Bergsma.
The team must record one of the four fastest times in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round scheduled for Tuesday. Ritsma stressed the tactical nature of the current lineup and confirmed the decision to proceed with Van de Bunt, Huizinga, and Bosker based on their World Cup performances. He indicated that any further changes would be considered later.
Additional comments by Jorrit Bergsma’s coach, Jillert Anema, who suggested Bergsma belonged in the fastest lineup, were downplayed by Ritsma, who said he does not get distracted by such remarks. The coach remains focused on aiming for a strong performance in the upcoming competition.
