The Dutch women’s speed skating team secured the silver medal in the team pursuit at the Winter Olympics, finishing behind Canada by less than a second.

The Dutch team, consisting of Joy Beune, Marijke Groenewoud, and Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, acknowledged Canada’s superior performance on the day of the final. Canada finished the race 0.96 seconds faster, successfully defending their Olympic title. Having won the world championship in team pursuit only a year earlier, the Dutch entered the Games as strong contenders but faced challenges with their form during the competition.
During the quarterfinals, the Dutch team qualified with the third-best time and faced Japan in the semifinals. They managed to hold on for most of the race but were ultimately challenged by Canada’s late surge in the final laps. Rijpma-de Jong noted that Canada possibly had an easier semifinal, potentially conserving energy for the final, while the Dutch team had to exert significant effort to advance.
Despite the disappointment of not securing gold, the team expressed pride in their silver medal. Joy Beune described their effort as battling until the end, and Marijke Groenewoud emphasized that silver was the highest achievable outcome on the day. The team’s consistent performance over the past two winters, often finishing ahead of Canada, highlights their competitiveness in the sport.
Rintje Ritsma, the Dutch head coach, reflected positively on the women’s silver medal despite his personal dissatisfaction with the results. He also commented on the men’s team finishing fourth, acknowledging the disappointment but recognizing the efforts made. Ritsma has yet to decide whether he will continue in his coaching role.
The silver medal represents an improvement from the 2022 Winter Olympics, where the Dutch women’s team took bronze. Upcoming events include the 1,500 meter races for Rijpma-de Jong and Groenewoud, while Beune’s Olympic participation has concluded. Beune expressed pride in winning her first Olympic medal, considering silver a significant achievement for the team.
