Jorrit Bergsma and Marijke Groenewoud both won gold medals in the mass start events at the Olympic speed skating competition, marking a successful conclusion for the Dutch team.
NOS Schaatsen, a Dutch news outlet, reported on the results and the athletes’ reactions.
Jorrit Bergsma took an early and unexpected lead during the men’s mass start race, maintaining it to secure the gold medal. At 40 years old, Bergsma outpaced strong sprint competitors, including Jordan Stolz, significantly impressing spectators. Bergsma expressed disbelief and satisfaction following his win, remarking on how he had not anticipated returning to Olympic gold twelve years after his first title in the 10,000 meters. He joked about potentially defending his title in the next Olympic cycle.
Contrary to initial impressions, Bergsma’s early attack was not part of the team’s original plan. His teammate Stijn van de Bunt was expected to make the first move while carrying out defensive work to disrupt other fast sprinters. However, when Bergsma established a gap alongside Viktor Thorup of Denmark, the group of chasing competitors hesitated, allowing Bergsma to extend his lead and ultimately claim victory. Coach Jillert Anema confirmed the tactical shift during the race and recognized Van de Bunt’s vital supporting role.
Meanwhile, Marijke Groenewoud witnessed Bergsma’s winning effort before competing in the women’s mass start final. She credited his victory for boosting her confidence heading into her own race. Despite facing stiff competition, Groenewoud collaborated strategically with teammate Bente Kerkhoff, who maintained a high pace to control the field. Groenewoud then launched a well-timed final sprint that the other contenders could not match.
Groenewoud described her gold medal as a gratifying conclusion to the Games after mixed results in individual events such as the 1,500, 3,000, and 5,000 meters. She highlighted her enjoyment and skill in the mass start format, which involves both endurance and tactical racing. Notably, Groenewoud was also proposed to by her partner following the medal ceremony. Both athletes expressed plans to rest and reflect after the intensive Olympic schedule.
