The Dutch skating federation, KNSB, has nominated Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Joy Beune, and Marijke Groenewoud to compete at the Women’s World Allround Speed Skating Championships, departing from its established selection procedure.
AD, a news outlet from the Netherlands, reports that the KNSB usually appoints two skaters per tournament and gender to fill three available spots, but in this instance for the women’s World Allround Championships it opted for a different approach.
The KNSB’s standard policy aims to allocate places evenly by gender and event, naming two athletes despite having three positions to fill for the competition. However, recognizing the particular circumstances or performances of the athletes, the federation has chosen to include all three skaters for the women’s category this time.
This decision allows Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Joy Beune, and Marijke Groenewoud to represent the Netherlands together at the upcoming World Allround Speed Skating Championships, reflecting the federation’s flexibility in its selection process for this event.
