Finn Sonnekalb demonstrated his growing prowess in the junior speed skating circuit at the World Junior Championships held in the Max Aicher Arena in Inzell, Germany.

Returning to a familiar environment and competing among peers his own age, Finn Sonnekalb displayed significant improvements compared to his debut Winter Olympics performance in Milan. Where he previously finished twelfth in the 1000 meters and thirteenth in the 1500 meters without gaining much attention, Sonnekalb quickly made an impact in Inzell by setting a new personal best in the 500 meters with a time of 35.13 seconds. This performance put him substantially ahead of the rest of the field, with the second-place finisher Miika Klevstuen from Norway nearly half a second behind. Nathan Pijl also achieved a personal best, securing fifth place with a time of 36.04 seconds.
Sonnekalb’s strength was even more evident in the 1500 meters, where he stopped the clock at 1:44.86—over a second faster than Japan’s Taiga Sasaki, who finished second at 1:46.01. Dutch skater Thijs Wiersma came in third but was about 1.5 seconds behind despite having cut nearly three seconds from his personal record. Wiersma further impressed in the mass start semifinals by advancing from the rear of the pack to finish second in his heat. Sem Spruit won the other semifinal heat. Both Dutch skaters showed a better command of the mass start discipline than Sonnekalb, who qualified for the final by securing a crucial point during the heats.
On the women’s side, Team Netherlands did not achieve top podium positions in the 500 and 1500 meters. Mette ten Cate was the top Dutch sprinter with a seventh place in the 500 meters, while Jasmijn Veenhuis matched this placement in the 1500 meters. Both skaters managed to advance through the mass start elimination round, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Leading the women’s events was Kristina Zhumekova from Kazakhstan, who has been dominant throughout the winter season and claimed victory in both the 500 and 1500 meters.
