At the World Sprint Championships in Heerenveen, Femke Kok delivered a strong performance by setting a new track record of 36.67 seconds in the first 500-meter race. This achievement highlighted her continued success following the Olympic Games, where she won gold in the 500 meters and silver in the 1,000 meters. Kok’s performance has brought her 24 consecutive victories in the 500-meter event, reinforcing her position as a leading competitor.
Suzanne Schulting also started the sprint tournament well, recording a time of 37.30 seconds, though she was six-tenths of a second slower than Kok. The Polish skater Kaja Ziomek-Nogal held third place after the initial distance. Kok’s time set an optimistic tone for the championship, marking her attempts to claim the world sprint champion title, a distinction she has yet to achieve despite finishing second in 2022 and 2024.
Kok reflected on her season, noting a mix of emotions entering the competition after focusing on the Olympics as her primary goal. She described the World Sprint Championships as a secondary goal but was motivated to continue her winning streak and perform strongly. Marrit Fledderus, the third Dutch competitor in the race, posted the fourth-best time with 37.50 seconds. Fledderus generally performs better in the 1,000-meter event, which is scheduled to take place later in the championship. The program includes a second 500-meter and 1,000-meter race planned for Friday, offering additional opportunities for competitors to improve their rankings.
