Jenning de Boo outpaced his main rival Jordan Stolz in the opening 500-meter race at the World Sprint Championships in Thialf, setting a new track record.
According to NOS, the Dutch skater recorded a time of 33.78 seconds, surpassing Stolz’s 34.13. De Boo, who had been defeated by Stolz at the Winter Olympics, expressed surprise at his time, noting several mistakes during his run but also a feeling of strong form.
De Boo had mentioned earlier in the week that he felt in excellent shape, possibly better than during the Olympics, despite questions about his mental readiness after focusing heavily on the Games. His performance on the ice demonstrated eagerness and confidence, with a margin of over three-tenths of a second ahead of Stolz.
Jordan Stolz, 21, is aiming to claim both the world sprint and allround titles at this competition in Heerenveen. He acknowledged needing to refocus after the Olympics in Milan, reminding himself of the importance of the world title pursuit.
Fellow Dutch skater Joep Wennemars, who narrowly missed medals at the Olympics, posted a time of 34.57 seconds, about eight-tenths behind De Boo. Another Dutch competitor, Janno Botman, finished eighth with a time of 34.71 seconds, one place behind Wennemars.
The second 500-meter and 1,000-meter races are scheduled for Friday evening, with the first 1,000 meters having taken place Thursday night.
