Femke Kok secured the world sprint speed skating championship at Thialf with a commanding performance over two days, establishing a clear lead over her competitors.

In a packed and lively Thialf arena, Femke Kok demonstrated consistent excellence across her races on Thursday and Friday to claim the world sprint title. Although this was her first world sprint championship, Kok approached the competition with focus and composure rather than overwhelming excitement, having previously found a different emotional release after her Olympic success in Milan.
The 25-year-old from Friesland executed faultless performances in the four races comprising two 500-meter and two 1000-meter events. Kok described her intention to deliver strong races throughout the competition and expressed satisfaction with her success, especially with the significant margin by which she won. She also acknowledged and appreciated the enthusiastic support from the audience throughout the event.
Kok shared the podium with fellow Dutch skaters Suzanne Schulting, who took second place, and Marrit Fledderus, who achieved a surprising third. The strong representation of Dutch women highlighted the country’s prominence in sprint speed skating. Kok’s winning times included 36.67 and 36.76 seconds in the 500-meter races and 1.13.10 and 1.13.38 in the 1000-meter races, which no other competitor came close to surpassing.
The race concluded with Kok needing only a time of 1.17.90 or better in her final 1000-meter race to secure the championship, a target she surpassed comfortably. The Japanese skater Sumire Kikuchi finished sixteenth, illustrating the gap between Kok and the rest of the field. Kok’s decisive victory at her home venue reinforced her status as one of the top sprinters in the world.
