Jenning de Boo strengthened his position at the World Sprint Championships after the second day, appearing likely to secure the world title following three distances.

On the second 500 meter race, De Boo and Jordan Stolz recorded identical start times, putting focus on whether Stolz could recover from his underperformance the previous day. However, the American was unable to increase his speed sufficiently, while De Boo maintained remarkable pace. The Dutch skater moved so quickly that he nearly lost balance in the final corner, but managed to stay upright thanks to his short track skating experience. De Boo completed the race in 33.93 seconds, slightly slower than his 33.78 seconds the day before when he took Stolz’s track record.
Commenting on his hand touching the ice in the last turn, De Boo said with a smile, “It was all part of the tactics, showing a bit of my short track background. No, it was a wobbly moment since I was taking the corner at 61 kilometers per hour. I admit I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment.”
Joep Wennemars is currently engaged in a close contest for third place overall, competing against Laurent Dubreil and Ning Zhongyan. In the 500 meter race against Zhongyan, Wennemars initially led after a fast start but ultimately finished slower by just over a tenth of a second, recording 34.77 seconds compared to Zhongyan’s 34.65. Meanwhile, Janno Botman struggled in his second 500 meter run, clocking 35.04 seconds, three tenths slower than the previous day, which effectively removed him from contention in the overall standings. Botman is presently in ninth place.
The decisive 1,000 meter race is scheduled for this evening, where De Boo has the opportunity to claim his first world sprint championship. Success would see him succeed Ning Zhongyan of China, who remains the reigning Olympic champion in the 1,500 meter event from the Milan Games. Notably, in 2022, two Dutch skaters, Thomas Krol and Jutta Leerdam, won the world sprint titles, and De Boo and Femke Kok have the chance to follow in their footsteps this evening.
