Marijke Groenewoud finished second at the World Allround Speed Skating Championships after a disrupted start impacted her gold medal chances.

Nonetheless, the focus here is on Dutch skater Marijke Groenewoud, who earned silver after a challenging tournament shaped by an unexpected pause early in the competition. Groenewoud performed well across the distances, finishing second in the 3000 meters and 5000 meters and fourth in the 1500 meters, showing consistent competitive form.
During her first race, a 500-meter heat against German competitor Lea Sophie Scholz, Groenewoud was affected by a delay caused by ice maintenance required after a preceding skater had slid extensively on the ice, damaging the timing sensors. This stoppage interrupted Groenewoud’s momentum just as she was preparing to start, a factor her coach, Arjan Samplonius, believes may have cost her the gold medal. Samplonius highlighted the difficulty athletes face when a race is unexpectedly paused, as it disrupts rhythm and concentration, remarking that Groenewoud could potentially have skated a faster first distance without the delay.
Groenewoud herself acknowledged the setback but emphasized the need to remain focused during the tournament’s multiple events. She indicated that while she had aimed for gold, she is proud to have secured silver amidst strong competition. She also expressed respect for the winner, noting that fellow competitor Wiklund delivered a strong performance throughout the championship.
