The Apeldoorn-based skating and roller skating club DNIJ has renamed its sports complex to the Ans Schut Ice and Roller Skating Rink in celebration of its 100th anniversary, paying tribute to the pioneering skater Ans (Boekema-) Schut.
Schaatsen.nl, published in the Netherlands, reported on the renaming event.
DNIJ has been located at its current facility in Apeldoorn since 2009, adjacent to the Omnisport cycling track. Ans Schut, who passed away last year, has a strong historical connection to the club. Following her Olympic gold medal win in 1968, she established a training group within DNIJ to utilize the artificial ice rink in Deventer, an initiative that marked significant progress in the club’s development and its engagement with speed skating.
According to the recently retired chairman, Henk Veneman, the club has experienced various periods of success over the years. Currently, the club includes prominent athletes such as Sanne in ’t Hof and Mika van Essen, who have competed at national championships, as well as Jorian ten Cate, the reigning Dutch mass start champion. The renaming of the sports complex honors Ans Schut’s lasting impact on Dutch women’s skating and her efforts to improve training facilities.
