American speed skater Brittany Bowe has announced her retirement following the conclusion of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, bringing to an end a distinguished career marked by world records, multiple world championships, and two Olympic bronze medals.

Brittany Bowe began her athletic journey in Florida, where she initially trained as an inline skater due to a lack of ice facilities. Starting inline skating at the age of eight, she quickly rose to international prominence, winning multiple inline skating World Championship titles and securing gold at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Alongside her skating pursuits, Bowe also played collegiate basketball for the Florida Atlantic Owls before deciding to focus on long track speed skating.
Inspired by former inline skaters competing at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Bowe relocated to Salt Lake City to pursue ice speed skating. She soon established herself as a leading competitor in middle-distance events, particularly the 1000 meters. Bowe set the 1000m world record in 2013, and after various changes in record holders, she reclaimed the record in 2019 with a time of 1:11.61—a record that still stands.
Throughout her career, Bowe won multiple titles, including consecutive World Sprint Championships in 2015 and 2016 and four World Single Distance titles (three in the 1000m and one in the 1500m). Despite significant success on the World Cup circuit and at World Championships, Olympic gold eluded her. She earned bronze medals in the Team Pursuit at PyeongChang in 2018 and in the 1000m at Beijing in 2022.
At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Bowe competed in her fourth Games, finishing fourth in the Team Pursuit, 1000m, and 1500m events. Reflecting on her retirement, she described finishing just outside the medals three times as “heartbreaking” but expressed peace with her decision, acknowledging the impact speed skating has had on her life.
