Joep Wennemars has voiced his frustration with Kjeld Nuis’ recent criticism of the Olympic qualification system, arguing that Nuis raised his concerns at an inappropriate time.
NOS, the Dutch news outlet, reports on the exchange between the two speed skaters regarding the Olympic qualifying tournament (OKT).
Earlier this month, Kjeld Nuis expressed his dissatisfaction with the current system, stating that top athletes should be preselected for events such as the 1,500 meters, mentioning skaters like Joy Beune, Femke Kok, and potentially himself. Wennemars agreed with the general criticism but emphasized that the timing of Nuis’ complaints was inappropriate. He suggested that such debates could have taken place years ago or would be better addressed after the Olympic Games.
Wennemars secured his Olympic spot alongside teammate Tijmen Snel, finishing ahead of Nuis, who narrowly missed qualification in fourth place. Reflecting on his performance, Wennemars acknowledged his anger fueled by a strong desire to win and said he found personal satisfaction in surpassing Nuis on this occasion.
Highlighting his own restraint, Wennemars revealed that he has previously chosen to remain silent about issues in the selection system, reserving his criticism for when it mattered most—during the OKT. He criticized Nuis for not engaging earlier in discussions regarding rule changes, noting that Nuis was absent from athlete meetings and only voiced concerns when his own interests were directly affected.
While acknowledging Nuis as an outstanding skater with accomplishments worthy of respect, Wennemars contended that Nuis missed opportunities over the past twelve years to advocate for alterations to the qualification rules rather than raising them at the last moment during the trials.
