Seventeen-year-old Dutch cycling prospect Thijs Wiersma took part in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OKT), delivering strong personal records in both the 1500 meter and 5000 meter events.
According to Wielerflits from the Netherlands, Wiersma, a member of the JEGG-SKIL-DJR team, was a notable participant in Tuesday’s 1500 meter race at the qualifiers. Competing against notable contenders including skating sensation Stijn van de Bunt, he completed the race in 1 minute 49.254 seconds, significantly improving his personal best.
Wiersma is recognized as one of the most promising young cyclists in the Netherlands. He is preparing to begin his second junior season in 2026, with expectations that he will join a major cycling team following that year. His 2025 season was marked by impressive performances including a third place at the Dutch National Time Trial Championships, a sixth place in the Acht van Bladel, and participation in the European Championships held in Drôme-Ardèche.
During a busy Christmas period, Wiersma made his Olympic Qualifying Tournament debut on December 26 with the 5000 meter race, finishing 16th. Shortly after, he competed in the 1500 meter event, again setting a new personal record. While these results did not secure Olympic qualification for Wiersma, they offered the broader public an introduction to the talented junior cyclist. Reflecting on his experience, Wiersma noted his excitement and focus, saying he had little nervousness entering the ice rink and was eager to compete. Despite his satisfaction with the race overall, he quickly began analyzing areas for improvement.
