Rintje Ritsma, the Dutch speed skating coach, has faced significant online criticism and death threats following the announcement of the Dutch Olympic speed skating team.
NOS, a news outlet from the Netherlands, reports on the reactions Ritsma has received.
The 55-year-old coach from Friesland described how the negative responses, particularly on social media, have crossed boundaries. Ritsma acknowledged he was aware that criticisms come with his role, but expressed concern over the severity of some messages that included death wishes directed at him. He emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and reflective of the current climate on social media, where anonymity can embolden harsh commentary.
Ritsma referred to a recent Instagram post by speed skater Joy Beune, who urged people not to wish harm or death to others, following similar hostile reactions aimed at her partner, fellow skater Kjeld Nuis. Ritsma described the presence of these ‘keyboard warriors’ as a societal problem that he tries to disregard in order to focus on his responsibilities.
The controversy primarily arose due to the removal of Tim Prins from the Olympic squad. Prins was left out to make room for Marcel Bosker, who was selected for the team pursuit event. Prins publicly expressed anger about the decision. Ritsma sympathized with Prins, noting that as a former athlete, he understands how painful such exclusions can be. Although all athletes are aware of the selection rules, Ritsma recognized that it is difficult for them not to feel personally affected.
Ritsma stressed that the public often draws conclusions too quickly without full context. He explained that the selection is part of a system designed to be as fair as possible. With more qualified speed skaters than available spots, not everyone can be accommodated. Ritsma is confident that the choices made were logical and necessary to complete the Olympic team for the team pursuit.
He also acknowledged that the chosen trio for pursuit—Marcel Bosker, Chris Huizinga, and Stijn van der Bunt—have never competed together before. However, there is planned time before the competition to develop their teamwork and refine their performance. Ritsma confirmed there is no possibility to reverse the selections and affirmed the team’s commitment to achieving the best results possible with the current lineup.
