Merel Conijn, who secured a bronze medal in the 3000 meters at last year’s World Championships, elected to skip the World Cup events this season to focus on peaking at key competitions such as the Olympic Qualification Tournament and the Olympics. Despite often being considered a favorite in the 5000 meters, attention was drawn to her performance in this opening 3000 meter race.
Midway through the event, multiple Olympic champion and world record holder Martina Sáblíková from the Czech Republic competed in the sixth heat against Germany’s Josie Hofmann. Sáblíková holds the world record for the 3000 meters at 3:52.02.
The competition intensified later in the program with the ninth heat featuring Marijke Groenewoud of the Netherlands competing against Norway’s Ragne Wiklund. Wiklund has impressed this season, recently setting a track record in Inzell two weeks prior. Groenewoud, after a season of varying results, expressed confidence in her form ahead of the tournament. This race marked the beginning of her participation in several events at the competition.
The final race, heat ten, included debutant Joy Beune facing Canadian Isabelle Weidemann. Beune’s focus on the 3000 meters represents her sole opportunity to win an individual Olympic medal, having missed qualification for her preferred 1500 meter event.
