Sandrine Tas has been identified as a potential medal contender in the 5000-meter speed skating event by former Olympic champions Yvonne van Gennip and Jochem Uytdehaage, despite limited experience at this distance.
According to an article published by schaatsen.nl in the Netherlands, Tas has only completed the 5000 meters four times in her career. Her most recent race at the start of December saw her set a new Belgian national record with a time of 6:52.24, narrowly missing a podium finish. Tas described the race as memorable, emphasizing the motivation she gains from recognition by experienced athletes like Van Gennip. However, she maintains a realistic perspective on her prospects.
Tas’s relatively limited experience at the longest distance in speed skating can be partly explained by the development pathway of many Belgian skaters. Due to the scarcity of ice facilities in Belgium, many start their careers on inline skates rather than ice skates. For example, 22-year-old Fran Vanhoutte initially specialized in roller skating, winning multiple junior European titles before transitioning more fully to ice skating. To develop her skills and gain competition experience, she moved to Heerenveen in the Netherlands in 2022 and began participating in marathon skating events.
Vanhoutte noted that learning proper skating technique on ice at a relatively late age presented challenges. She struggled initially to master the skater’s stride and the edge control necessary for competitive speed skating. This reflects a common issue among inline skaters moving to ice, as many face difficulties adapting to the different mechanics involved in ice skating.
