Jutta Leerdam expressed the intense pressure she experienced before securing the Olympic gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed skating event.
According to NOS, a Dutch news outlet, Leerdam’s emotions were evident immediately after crossing the finish line and realizing she had become the Olympic champion.
Leerdam described her feelings as a release from the immense pressure she had been under. She noted that the stress was not only related to being the top favorite but also to the many demands and challenges associated with competing at the Olympics. She reflected on the mental resilience necessary to overcome distractions, including false rumors and online commentary, which made maintaining focus especially difficult. Despite these challenges, she managed to maintain her concentration and perform at her peak.
During the race, Leerdam observed a very fast time set by competitor Femke Kok, which she acknowledged as impressive. However, she focused on delivering her best performance rather than being affected by other skaters’ results. Leerdam described the race as feeling unusual because she skated faster than ever before, pushing through physical pain with determination and the mindset that she had many years ahead to recover.
Her mental focus was summed up when she saw the green numbers on the scoreboard signifying that she was the fastest. The accomplishment felt like a dream to her, and she admitted she was still trying to fully comprehend the achievement, even trembling from the excitement of winning Olympic gold.
Femke Kok, who finished just behind Leerdam with a silver medal, regarded Leerdam’s performance with respect, acknowledging that although she briefly hoped to claim the title, Leerdam was slightly faster. The time difference between them was only 0.28 seconds, while the third-place skater, Miho Takagi from Japan, finished significantly behind by 1.64 seconds. Kok noted that she and Leerdam demonstrated they were clearly ahead of the rest of the field and recognized their strong form going into upcoming races. Kok also expressed confidence in her ability to perform well under pressure, as she displayed during this event.
