Czech speed skater Metoděj Jílek secured a silver medal in the 5,000 metres event at his Olympic debut in Milan, marking the Czech team’s second medal of the Games.
According to Radio Prague International, the 19-year-old athlete, who has been the leading figure in long-distance speed skating this World Cup season, was narrowly beaten by Norway’s world record holder and world champion Sander Eitrem. The bronze medal went to Italy’s Riccardo Lorello.
Jílek’s achievement follows in the footsteps of fellow Czech skater Martina Sáblíková, a seven-time Olympic medallist known for her success in long-distance events. Looking ahead, Jílek plans to compete for medals in both the 10,000 metres and the mass start events at the Games. His performance highlights the growing strength of Czech athletes in international speed skating competitions.
