Bart Swings Reflects on Challenging Start at Winter Olympics 5000m Event

Bart Swings, a Belgian speed skater and four-time Olympian, acknowledged that his performance in the 5000-meter race fell short of his expectations. Although he did not enter the race with high hopes for a medal, Swings hoped for a confidence boost prior to the upcoming mass start event, which is his primary focus at these Winter Games. Despite a steady pace through much of the race, he experienced a decline towards the end, resulting in a 15th-place finish. Swings admitted that he did not feel good on the ice and described the time as disappointing.

Swings’ race began with an obstacle when he and competitor Fridtjof Petzold had to reduce speed during an early crossing, which cost him valuable seconds. Swings had anticipated relying on Petzold but found his fellow skater unintentionally obstructive. Nonetheless, Swings chose not to blame Petzold and instead pointed to the need for improved execution in competitive conditions as opposed to training, where he has been performing well.

Addressing the reasons for his underwhelming performance, Swings suggested that lingering stress and the pressure of the Olympics might have affected him. He noted improvements in his cornering technique but mentioned that maintaining rhythm on the straightaways remains challenging. Despite the setback, Swings emphasized that he is not panicking and believes he is on the right track. He remarked that he has worked extensively on enhancing his top speed for the mass start and plans to incorporate new training stimuli before the event, scheduled for February 21.

Swings also reported a positive status regarding a knee injury that troubled him last year. He stated that his knee feels the best it has in weeks, and he feels physically strong. This ongoing recovery contributes to his overall confidence heading into his main competition.
