During a discussion on the final day of Olympic competition, Erben Wennemars, a former speed skater and current analyst for NOS, spoke candidly about the emotional state of his son Joep following the 1000 meter race. Wennemars described Joep as deeply upset and unable to stop crying after an incident on the ice took away his opportunity for a podium finish.
Joep Wennemars had been performing strongly in the 1000 meter event when he was obstructed by his Chinese competitor Lian Ziwen during a lane change. This collision affected Joep’s time, preventing him from securing a medal position despite being given a rerun, ultimately finishing fifth in the event. Erben Wennemars referred to the incident as a careless mistake by the Chinese skater, emphasizing it was unintentional but had significant consequences.
Erben further explained that Joep wrestled with the unfairness of the situation, stating that while losing due to lack of performance is something Joep could accept, being deprived of a medal chance through such an error was very difficult for him. Joep reportedly expressed a desire to return home, though a departure from the Games is not expected as he is still scheduled to compete in the 500 and 1500 meter events. Erben noted that while it will be challenging, Joep will need to regain focus for the remaining competitions.
