Jenning de Boo secured the silver medal in the Olympic 500 meter speed skating event, finishing just behind his main competitor, Jordan Stolz, who set a new Olympic record to claim gold.

In a closely contested race, Dutch athlete Jenning de Boo completed the 500 meter in 33.88 seconds, narrowly slower than American favorite Jordan Stolz, who finished with a record-breaking time of 33.77 seconds. Canadian Laurent Dubreuil earned the bronze medal with a time of 34.26 seconds. Another Dutch skater, Sebas Diniz, placed fifth at 34.46 seconds, while Joep Wennemars finished 21st with a time of 34.89 seconds following his earlier setback in the 1,000 meter event.
The competition between De Boo and Stolz was highly anticipated as a clash between two of the world’s top sprinters. Stolz started from the inner lane and De Boo from the outer lane. During the race, De Boo was able to close in on Stolz and appeared alongside him in the final turn. However, Stolz managed to pull ahead slightly in the last meters, resulting in a 0.11 second difference at the finish line. Though De Boo has beaten Stolz at the World Championships last year, he was unable to secure the win on the Olympic stage in Milan.
This gold medal marks Stolz’s second of these Winter Games, following his earlier victory in the 1,000 meter event. For reigning world champion De Boo, this silver medal is his second at the Milan Olympics, adding to the silver he won in the 1,000 meter on Wednesday. The result contributed to the Netherlands’ overall medal count, bringing their total to eight in the Italian Games so far.
