Gerrit Schädler, father of Thuringian speed skater and Olympian Finn Sonnekalb, completed a week-long 1,000-kilometer bike journey from Erfurt to Milan to show his support for his son’s participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The German news outlet MDR reported on this remarkable journey taken by Schädler, arriving in the Olympic host city ahead of the games.
Starting on February 2 under wintry, snowy conditions in Erfurt, Schädler cycled over various terrains, including the Brenner Pass, to reach Milan within seven days. He rode a gravel bike equipped with minimal gear, dressed for cool weather, and carrying hydration bottles and small bags. A small Olympic flag was attached to his bike as he headed to Arco della Pace, the site in central Milan where the Olympic flame is lit during the games.
Schädler had promised to make this journey if his son qualified for the Winter Olympics. Sonnekalb is one of eighteen athletes representing Thuringia at the event, many supported by family and fans attending in person. Although the initial weather was harsh and the roads icy, Schädler was prepared through careful route planning and was not concerned about his physical conditioning, as he is accustomed to undertaking large cycling tours annually.
Finn Sonnekalb, an 18-year-old speed skating talent from Erfurt, has been highlighted as a rising prospect capable of reviving Germany’s medal hopes in the sport after a 16-year hiatus. His father’s dedication exemplifies the family support behind his Olympic campaign.
