German speed skating hopeful Finn Sonnekalb has reported feeling almost fully recovered and ready to compete in the 1500-meter race at the Winter Olympics in Milan.
Yahoo Nachrichten Germany reports that the 18-year-old athlete expressed confidence ahead of his second and final event, scheduled for Thursday at 16:30 local time, to be broadcast on ARD and Eurosport.
Sonnekalb experienced a mild infection during the first week of the Olympics, which affected his performance in the 1000-meter event where he finished in twelfth place. Despite this setback, he stated that he is now close to full health, noting that occasional symptoms occur only in the morning. He believes he is in good shape and hopeful of delivering a strong performance in his specialist distance.
The 1500 meters is considered Sonnekalb’s signature event. German speed skaters have historically struggled to secure medals in Milan at the current games, having missed podium finishes in the past three Winter Olympics of 2014, 2018, and 2022.
