Joep Wennemars delivered a strong performance in the 1500-meter race at the Milan Winter Games but finished just short of a medal, placing fourth by 0.23 seconds.

Wennemars faced challenges at the Milan Winter Games, with an earlier incident on the 1000-meter event affecting his chances after a collision with an inattentive opponent. Despite that setback, his performance in the 1500-meter race showed significant improvement. He was matched with Italian skater Daniele Di Stefano, but after an aggressive start, Wennemars skated mostly alone without the opportunity to follow a close competitor’s pacing. This solo effort resulted in his best time so far on Olympic ice, but it was not enough to secure a medal.
The 23-year-old skater expressed clear disappointment, stating he skated very well but could not believe the final result. He acknowledged the strength of his opponents, including notable times by Ning Zhongyan of China and the two-time Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis. Even the eventual winner, Jordan Stolz, managed to skate just under Wennemars’ time. While supportive words about his youth and future opportunities were offered, Wennemars focused on the present moment and his frustration.
His father, former skater Erben Wennemars, was enthusiastic about the promising performance, but the outcome remained disappointing for the younger Wennemars. Looking forward, Joep remains determined, suggesting that the results of his hard work will eventually come to fruition multiple times in his career.
