At 40 years old, Jorrit Bergsma has reached a pinnacle in his speed skating career, capturing gold at the Winter Olympics in Milan in the mass start event, a discipline that aligns closely with his roots in marathon skating. This victory comes twelve years after his gold medal in Sochi on the 10-kilometer event, demonstrating a remarkable longevity in the sport as he competes successfully against younger athletes. Bergsma described the moment as fulfilling, alongside the support of his family, including his wife Heather and children Brent and Barbara.
Despite his age, Bergsma feels physically capable and motivated to continue competing.
