Viktor Thorup secured a historic silver medal for Denmark in the mass start speed skating event, following Olympic champion Jorrit Bergsma’s victory at the Winter Games in Milan.

On Saturday, Viktor Thorup achieved the first individual winter Olympic medal ever for Denmark by finishing second in the mass start event behind Netherlands’ Jorrit Bergsma. Before his accomplishment, Danish medals at the Winter Games had only come from the women’s curling team, who won silver in Nagano in 1998. Thorup’s performance marked a significant milestone for his country in winter sports.
Despite the triumphant result, Thorup’s path to the podium was hampered by illness. Throughout the Winter Games in Milan, the 31-year-old athlete struggled with his health, including stomach issues and vomiting, which severely limited his training opportunities. He had to withdraw early from the 10-kilometer race due to sickness and only managed to train twice during the week prior to the mass start event. Nonetheless, he persisted, motivated in part by support from his parents, who visited him at the Olympic Village.
In the mass start, Thorup adopted a strategic approach by following Bergsma closely, aware of the Dutch skater’s strong record in the event. Together, they launched an early breakaway from the pack that ultimately held until the finish. While Thorup was unable to match Bergsma’s final sprint, he expressed great satisfaction with his silver medal and the lessons he learned about perseverance and making the best of challenging circumstances.
