The speed skating events at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan concluded after competitions took place from February 7 to 21, featuring 14 medal sets awarded among both men and women.
According to Suspilne, Ukraine, the Netherlands emerged as the most successful country in the speed skating discipline, securing five gold medals. Dutch athletes won in various events, including victories on the final competition day, where Jorrit Bergsma took the gold in the men’s mass start and Marijke Jornaoud claimed the women’s mass start title. The total of five gold medals was achieved across five different Dutch skaters, predominantly in women’s events.
Speed skating has been part of the Winter Olympic program since 1924. The Netherlands is historically the most successful nation in this sport, having achieved victories across eight consecutive Winter Games—an unprecedented record. Only Norway and the USSR have matched three consecutive games before. Over time, the Netherlands’ gold medal tally in speed skating has slightly decreased from eight golds in 2014 but remains dominant despite an increase in competition disciplines.
Italy, the host country, added three gold medals at the Milan arena through victories by Francesca Lollobrigida in the women’s 3000 and 5000 meters, as well as a gold for the men’s team pursuit. The overall medal standings in speed skating placed the Netherlands at the top with a total of 13 medals (5 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze), followed by the United States, Italy, Norway, and Canada.
