Coach Samplonius described the atmosphere at the ice rink as one of the best days, highlighting the energy from the stadium audience and the effective combination of live commentary and music that motivated the athletes.
According to Schaatsen.nl, Samplonius focused particularly on two athletes under his guidance, Anema and Breeuwsma, who showed strong performances during the season.
Samplonius noted that Bergsma performed to the best of his ability, exceeding expectations during this period, while Groenewoud’s results fell short of what was anticipated. He emphasized her strong contributions in team events and persistence during individual races. He addressed some media coverage doubting Marijke Groenewoud’s mindset and form, underlining that she showed phenomenal capabilities during training prior to the 1500 meters.
The coach described the effort made to help Groenewoud perform at her best across all individual distances, noting that when she skates freely, few can match her speed. The goal was to replicate that level of performance in individual races such as the 1500 meters and 3000 meters. However, Samplonius expressed frustration that the breakthrough to achieve consistent gold medal performances had not yet been found, observing that only those who deliver when it matters most secure the top podium positions.
He acknowledged that Groenewoud succeeded in the mass start event, but not in individual timed trials. Samplonius also praised her short track background for giving her resilience, the ability to bounce back quickly from setbacks—a trait she demonstrated previously in marathon and inlineskating competitions. He referred to her experiences during the Beijing Winter Olympics, where despite being capable of winning, she was twice taken down by another competitor, which affected her results.
Samplonius contrasted this with comments from Joep Wennemars, who expressed the emotional challenge of managing tough periods despite his strong performance. Highlighting Groenewoud’s ability to overcome adversity, he implied that resilience is crucial for success and moving forward in sport.
