Merijn Scheperkamp reflected on a delayed emotional response following a demanding season and is now focusing on new objectives as he returns to competitive speed skating.

Scheperkamp described the period after December as intense, with events like the European Championships, a training camp, and the World Cup in Inzell following quickly. He noted that he had little time to process the Olympic qualification tournament (OKT), and it was only after returning home that the emotional impact set in. The departure of training partners headed to Milan also affected him, though he acknowledged it as part of the sport.
Unlike some of his peers, Scheperkamp chose to recover at home. He engaged in activities he enjoyed, such as spending time with his girlfriend and pursuing hobbies outside of skating. Going for rounds of surfing helped him clear his mind during this period.
Now back on the ice, Scheperkamp has adopted a goal-oriented approach. Rather than training without purpose, he focuses on setting new objectives including improving his start, adjusting his positioning, and refining his shoulder movements during turns. Physically, he feels strong and reports excellent test results. However, he believes the difference lies in on-ice efficiency, a focus area he has been diligently working on with his coaching staff.
Earlier in the season, Scheperkamp experienced some doubts about his development, feeling somewhat stuck at his current level. When asked about possible new training stimuli, he preferred not to speculate, stating that more information about his future in skating would be revealed soon after a period of careful consideration.
At present, Scheperkamp is taking competition one event at a time. He highlighted the Dutch National Championships as an opportunity to add quality to his season after a lengthy period without major races. His ideal outcome at the event is to win, though he remains realistic and accepting of strong performances even if others are faster. He expressed confidence that continued self-improvement will enhance his chances of claiming the title.
